Poetry of everyday human life
The photographer Sherrie Nickol grew up in Osceola, a small town on the banks of the Mississippi in Arkansas, USA, and initially studied history at the University of Louisiana in Ohio. When she picked up a camera for the first time at the age of 20, she was fascinated, immediately changed her subject and devoted herself to photographing people. On the advice of her professor, she went to New York after completing her studies, where she settled.
Since then, Sherrie Nickol has been capturing scenes and intimate moments with her camera: people on the beach, young people in their parents' homes, tourists in foreign countries - the photographs tell personal stories and document everyday life in a simple, but nonetheless fascinating visual language. Sherrie Nickol focuses on people, whether in her large-format portraits, insights into family life or impressions from her travels. Her view of the world is authentic and positive. Her sincerity and respect enable an emotional bond to the people photographed. Young women and young people on the threshold of adulthood are particularly at the centre of her work: the volume published by Hirmer Verlag, Munich, reflects their worlds, longings and concerns with full-page reproductions of the intense colour and black-and-white photographs.
The photographs are divided into five chapters: 'Among Young People', a project she started when her son reached adolescence, 'By the Water', which brings together images of people spending carefree sunny days by the sea, 'Gatherings of People' with the results of a long-term project that covers the relationship between people and their environment in city parks, squares or museums, 'In the Moment', a collection of images that show the intimate as well as the public life of families and friends, and finally 'Faces', which mainly contains portraits of women of different ages.
With her pictures, photographer Sherrie Nickol tells stories of people growing up as well as the poetry of their everyday lives - authentic, honest and convincing. (vZ)
